Information Technology, writing a job friendly resume

When applying for that information technology career or position, many candidates know they have the qualifications to perform the specific tasks a company may need. .  Communicating your skills and qualifications to a human resource person who must read at least 20 resumes in a given day is another skill that needs to be acquired before your preparation can meet that opportunity.   This article will give you some important strategies you can use to improve your chances of getting that interview, which will lead to a job or career, which you have always wanted.

We have to look at your resume from the point of view of the person who must spend countless hours in a day reading resumes.  The key question is how to make your document stand out from the pack.  If you beat the competition, you get the job.  Ask yourself if I were reading at least 20 resumes per day what kind of information would I like to see from a candidate I would want to call in for an interview?
Now let’s make your resume a document everyone will want to read.

1 Many candidates write objective.  Something like, “To obtain a recognized position in which I can demonstrate my skills and abilities in the Industry, as well as to increase the productivity of the Company for which I will work”. This statement sounds very boiler plate and doesn’t communicate to your reader what you want.

A.       Under your contact information we need a goal.  Your reader needs to know what you want and your want should be your goal, which should be specific to the job you want. The Goal should match the job title listed on the company’s advertisement.   For example if you are applying for a computer repair job, then your goal is to be a computer repair technician.  Your reader will start to get interested because your goal matches what the company needs. Most people believe that winners have goals and losers have objectives.

2 Under the Goal section create a skills heading, which matches your goal. If your goal is to be a database administrator, listing your SQL/database skills is important.  If you are applying for a position as a computer programmer, list the programming languages you know.  When your skills match your goal, your resume will move to a preferred list.    Now your reader is beginning to become engaged in your document.  In less than ¼ of a page the subconscious message of a perfect match begins to appear in the mind of your reader.  Isn’t that what you want?

3 below the skills heading state your work experience, beginning with your most recent job and count backwards. Don’t be afraid to slightly alter your past job titles a bit to reflect the new opportunity you want.
4 Your next heading should be education and we need the most recent school you attended.  Employers will award points for attending school recently. Everyone must upgrade their training to keep up with the demands of today’s work force.

5 A sentence at the bottom of your document stating (references are available upon request. This builds a lot of credibility in the mind of your reader.  Some counselors don’t believe in the reference statement.  They believe if an employer wants references, they will ask for them.  This belief is not correct.  Candidates should be proud of their references and this pride will send a positive message to a future employer.

6 A cover letter is very important.  It should be approximately ½ of a page and contain sentences about the company.  The letter should be written in a manner, which will show the employer how your skills will contribute to the company’s mission.

Now your resume and cover letter will generate some excitement and hopefully a lot of phone calls requesting an interview.

Good luck.
